Investigations are ongoing into the tragic 2021 Rust shooting of a cinematographer at the hands of Alec Baldwin. To recap the story, Alec Baldwin was rehearsing a scene with gun he thought was unloaded. He pointed the gun at the cinematographer and somehow without pulling the trigger, the gun went off and the cinematographer was killed. Alec Baldwin feels no guilt in the matter but is very thankful for the support he has gotten during this trying time. The discussion now turns to the use of guns on movie sets. Nicolas Cage has thoughts on the matter
Hollywood Reporter held an actor's roundtable in which Cage took part. The topic was the tragic shooting and "discussion of whether there should be guns on sets at all." Cage said he "wasn't placing blame" and "wasn't talking about anybody" But, c'mon now.
“You need to know how to fight. [...] You need to know how to ride a motorcycle. [...] and you do need to know how to use a gun. You do. You need to take the time to know what the procedure is. Those are part of the job profiles. [...] Every stunt man needs to be a movie star, and every movie star needs to be a stunt man. That’s just part of the profile, and that’s all I’m going to say about it."
SPOILER: When people say "that's all they are going to say about it," they have a lot more they WANT to say about it.
Cage found his name tied to the incident. Rust was only the second movie for inexperienced armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed. Her first movie was with Nicolas Cage, where her inexperience almost led to Nicolas Cage having his eardrums blown out.
As for Alec Baldwin, he recently said in an Instagram video he's going to comply with the search warrant for his cellphone. Even though, he has yet to turn over his cellphone.
