Michael Lee Aday, the rock icon known as Meat Loaf, passed away at age 74. No cause of the death was given, but it was announced on his Facebook page: "Our hearts are broken to announce that the incomparable Meat Loaf passed away tonight with his wife Deborah by his side. Daughters Pearl and Amanda and close friends have been with him throughout the last 24 hours." He was an incredible performer and showman, one of those artists where, even if you weren't an active fan, when you heard a song you remembered just how good he was. Here are some of his best songs.

First is obviously "Paradise by the Dashboard Light," which was released in the 70s but became huge in the 90s. If you're an oldhead like me who was in high school then, there wasn't a school dance or sweet sixteen this wasn't played at. It was one of only three rock songs played: Paradise, "Mony Mony" by Billy Idol, and the DJ's choice for the third.

My personal favorite is "You Took the Words Right Out of Your Mouth." Lots of songs sound like arena rock albums. This song makes you feel like you're in an arena.

Then you had Meat Loaf's performance in the "Rocky Horror Picture Show," another 70s thing that made a come back in the 90s. I'm not sure what I can say about the movie. Legit don't know. It was shocking in the 70s. In 2021, at least five different characters will get you de-platformed from Facebook. Plus, I think "transvestite" is a pejorative now. Whatever the case, "Hot Patootie, Bless My Soul" is a killer song.

The last video isn't one of his songs. But Meat Loaf had an amazing voice that didn't always come through on some of his records. It did, however, come across during this performance of the National Anthem.

Rest in peace, Meat Loaf. Heaven couldn't wait any longer.

God speed.
