University Slaps Trigger Warning on Orwell's '1984,' calls it Explicit Material Students May Find 'Offensive'

The left is beyond parody. This statement can be no more true than when speaking about the leftist academics that control the universities. At the UK’s University of Northampton, staff have slapped a “trigger warning” on George Orwell’s 1984 for “’explicit material’ which some students may find ‘offensive and upsetting,’” reports the Daily Mail.

Can we slap a warning on the universities? Maybe something that says, “May cause complete loss of brain function. Approach with caution and at your own risk.”

Anyone who has read 1984 can see the irony. It’s rather meta, as one of the dominant themes in the book is censorship by a controlling government body. Talk about life imitating art.

Tory Parliament Member Andrew Bridgen commented on the disturbing move saying, “Our university campuses are fast becoming dystopian Big Brother zones where Newspeak is practised to diminish the range of intellectual thought and cancel speakers who don’t conform to it.”

“Too many of us – and nowhere is it more evident than our universities – have freely given up our rights to instead conform to a homogenised society governed by a liberal elite ‘protecting’ us from ideas that they believe are too extreme for our sensibilities.”

This isn’t to say there isn’t plenty in the book for readers to find unnerving or uncomfortable. If you can remain unaffected during a full reading of 1984, I might ask that you go get evaluated for psychopathy. But as Orwell biographer David Taylor puts it, “I think 13-year-olds might find some scenes in the novel disturbing, but I don’t think anyone of undergraduate age is really shocked by a book any more.”

And regardless of how squeamish the book might make some college kid, that’s exactly why they need to read it.

Perhaps if more people had read Orwell before this point in time we wouldn’t be where we are now, with universities playing Big Brother.
