It's official. The 2024 Republican presidential primary has begun. This big anti-Ron DeSantis oppo dump in the Politico Playbook, believed to have come from inside the GOP, proves it. Though I'd argue that the word "oppo" should be put in scare quotes. Let's take a look at what we learned about America's governor today.
- He has disgruntled staffers (who doesn't?) and no political machine.
- His close advisers are himself and his wife. There are no "Ron DeSantis guys."
- The one consultant he hired isn't as good as Karl Rove or David Axelrod.
- Former staffers have a support group to complain about how mean Desantis allegedly was to them.
- DeSantis fires people and blames them when there is a screw-up.
- The most explosive relevation? He hates meetings and sometimes has to be bribed with cake to show up.
To summarize what this all means:
Here's what all this most likely means. Because Ron DeSantis is hardly the only Republican who is considering a run for president. DeSantis has over 50% approval among EVERYONE in Florida. He has his COVID response as a real-time example of his leadership. Conservatives (the ones most reliable to vote in a primary) love the guy, especially watching how he makes the media cry mean-girl tears. And after yesterday's stunt where he signed a voter integrity bill live on Fox News, it's evident that he's running.
Anyone even slightly pondering running would have a poll in the field right now. All the money in my pockets right now says those polls show the same thing: DeSantis is the clear front-runner and is starting to run away with it. So "insiders" aligned with other potential candidates leaked today and are going to continue to leak because DeSantis needs to be taken down a notch. This means insiders with ties to establishment RINO candidates AS WELL AS other conservative candidates we may also be fans of. Yes, even the former president.
The knives are out. The game is afoot. The calls are coming from inside the house. And a bunch of other cliches that say GAME. F***ING. ON! How Ron DeSantis responds and/or handles these hits will start to show how ready he is for 2024.
