Governor Ron DeSantis Signs Bill Targeting Big Tech Censorship

Ron DeSantis just signed legislation banning Big Tech censorship in Florida. The governor had announced back in February what he wanted to see in a reform package. After passing the Florida House and the Senate , DeSantis signed the legislation today. The announcement was made with a press conference.

On major issues that require robust debate, Silicon Valley is acting like a council of censors. They cancel people. They shadowban people, which creates partisan echo chambers. And honestly? They are a big reason why his country is divided. And the worst part about this? Silicon Valley thinks they know better than you. Their power up until this point has effectively been unchecked. This is not how a free society should operate.
It's time to sep up and say We the People are given protection against the Silicon Valley power grab. We will be the first state to hold Big Tech accountable.
What's in the final set of reforms is unclear. When DeSantis first announced what he wanted reform to look like , these were some of the highlights.
Provide users the option to opt out of the various algorithms these platforms use to steer or suppress content.
Provide users the ability to bring lawsuits against tech companies for violations of these requirements under Florida's Unfair and Deceptive Trade Practices Act.
Imposing a daily $100,000 fine on a tech company that deplatforms a candidate for elected office until access to the platform is restored.
If a tech company promotes one candidate for office against another, the free promotion must be recorded as a campaign contribution.
If a tech company uses algorithms to suppress or prioritize the access of any content related to a political cause or candidate on the ballot, that company will face daily fines.
