Dr. Rachel Levine shattered a glass ceiling last week. She is the first transgender person to be nominated for an assistant secretary position. Last week, she became the first transgender person to take part in a hearing for an assistant secretary position. Not enamored by her beautiful bravery was Senator Rand Paul. Paul asked science-based health questions of Levine about minors. Both Paul and Levine are doctors. Levine is up for assistant secretary of Health and Human Services. Asking questions based on either health or human services, at least in Senator Paul's opinion, seemed like the right thing to do.
However, the senator's critics are accusing him of "transphobia." Paul answered the accusations on a recent edition of the Glenn Beck radio show.
I guess the danger is, you have to have some chutzpah. You have to have some guts, some courage to stand up because it is a culture out there where ... everybody is saying I made transphobic comments yesterday. All I did was ask whether a minor could consent to this kind of dramatic surgery. Nothing I ever said was hateful.
It's a question of serious consequences,. Most people would argue that children can't really make an informed consent.
This is not the first time Rand Paul has been accused of transphobia by critics. The senator also challenged another Biden nominee about letting biological males compete in girls' sports.
Levine hasn't provided answers to Senator Paul. Though with Democrats having the votes, it probably doesn't matter. Levine is expected to sail through the nomination.
