Report: Executive Order Coming from President Trump on Police Reform

Report: Executive Order Coming from President Trump on Police Reform

The focus in Washington this summer will be police reform. Because, well, you know (see DAVE CHAPPELLE DROPS RAW SPECIAL ON GEORGE FLOYD, DROP-KICKS DON LEMON, VIRTUE-SIGNALING CELEBS and THIS HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL COACH'S POWERFUL SPEECH ON RACISM IS WHAT WE NEED RIGHT NOW). Most people have their own idea of what "police reform" means and should look like. Reports are that President Trump will be issuing an executive order this week as to what he wants to see.

- a statement acknowledging that some law enforcement officers have gravely misused their authority and have caused communities and particularly black communities to mistrust them

- an order to establish a national certification and credentialing system for law enforcement agencies

-an order to create a federal database to track officers accused of wrongdoing like excessive use-of-force

-a directive to the secretary of Health and Human Services to work on encouraging police departments to involve mental health officials when dealing with issues of mental health, homelessness, and addiction

- a directive to encourage Congress to pass legislation related to policing.

The president also plans to meet in private "with a number of black families who have been affected by police violence." In general, it sounds promising. But we have to see what is in the actual executive order. Also, like with most things related to Trump, he then has to not undermine what sounds promising by tweeting dumb things and/or saying dumb things now that he is going to start rallies again.

I also think if we're going to acknowledge some LEOs have abused their authority, the same needs to be acknowledged of the elected officials who are quick to throw police under the bus if they think they can score a single political point. If there is one thing that makes an already dangerous job that much more difficult, it's the mayors and city council.

Bottom line, this is a complicated issue. Whether or not the people we are relying on to tackle it are serious enough people to do so, we'll see.
