Muhammad Ali was at the forefront of the civil right movement in the 1960s. He refused to be drafted into the Vietnam War over his Muslim religious beliefs. His fights against Joe Frazier and George Foreman became proxies for the culture wars of the time. Basically, he upset a lot of white people. So one might think that were he alive today, he'd be all about Black Lives Matter. But according to Ali's son, he wouldn't support them at all.
Muhammad Ali Jr. says his dad would have been sickened by how the protests have turned to violence and looting after the death of George Floyd.
"Don't bust up s–t, don't trash the place," he told The Post. "You can peacefully protest." ...
Of the BLM movement, Ali Jr., a Muslim like his father, said: "I think it's racist."
"It's not just black lives matter, white lives matter, Chinese lives matter, all lives matter, everybody's life matters. God loves everyone — he never singled anyone out. Killing is wrong no matter who it is," Ali said during an hour-long interview with The Post.
The obvious criticism here is that no one knows for sure what Ali would think. It's easy for his son, who shares his name, to say this when his father isn't here. However, in the 1960s, another icon of the civil rights movement was Jim Brown. Plus, when Ali was alive, while the media wanted him to speak out against President Trump, he did the exact opposite.
It's anyone's guess what the Greatest would think. But considering how seriously he took issues, I'm willing to bet he wouldn't be a fan of some of the "activists" running around lately who are anything but reasonable.
