REVIEW: Liberals May Hate Jon Stewart's New Movie 'Irresistible'

REVIEW: Liberals May Hate Jon Stewart's New Movie 'Irresistible'

Everyone reading this knows that Jon Stewart clearly plays for the left, although he's one of the few who remain intellectually honest (see 'CALLING ALL TRUMP SUPPORTERS RACIST IS HYPOCRITICAL'... SAYS JON STEWART?! and JON STEWART DOUBLES DOWN: 'SHUT UP CALLING TRUMP SUPPORTERS RACIST!'). He's also someone I've always been a huge fan of and is one of my top comedy influences. So I was skeptical when I heard he wrote and directed a political satire called Irresistible. It stars Steve Carell (fresh off of getting conned by the Minnesota Freedom Fund like the rest of Hollywood), Rose Byrne, and Chris Cooper. Here's the trailer.

It was so good, I'm almost at a loss to find the words to review it. Instead of spoiling anything, I'd rather you all go see it and then meet back here so that we can discuss. I'll put some coffee on. The quick review: Steven Carell plays a Democrat consultant who just got his ass kicked by Donald Trump. Knowing how horrible the left is at talking to normal people, he talks a colonel from Wisconsin (Chris Cooper) into running for mayor as a "different kind of Democrat." Byrne plays Carell's rival on the Republican side and starts working for the incumbent just to make Carell's character suffer. From there, antics ensue, with some hijinks and witty banter mixed in. Satirically, the way it lampoons our ridiculous political system is flawless. Cable news especially gets it bad. But where the brilliance lies is that unlike every other political movie that's ever been made, it manages to do it evenly, 50/50, right down the middle. Neither Republicans or Democrats are bad; it's the entire system. After watching, I posted something about it on Facebook. I got a comment from someone who is involved in cable news and previously was involved in tea party organizations. I got another comment from a friend who loathes everything the first friend stands for and who I've been arguing about politics with since college, when we first discovered that diners are open 24 hours. They both loved the movie. If anything, you can argue Stewart is much harder on the left than anything else, since the main thing that drives the movie is the Democrat Party's epic failure in talking to people outside D.C., Hollywood, and New York. And you know how the left can get when their worldview isn't 100% validated. Some may claim Rose Byrne's Republican consultant character is too over the top and maybe a little too evil, but as someone who used to work as a Republican consultant myself ... it was a pretty accurate portrayal. Plus, Byrne had the best line in the whole movie: <blockquote>"She's so pretty. I bet she smells like Pop Tarts."</blockquote> Irresistible is everything people hate about Washington, D.C., the media, and the ludicrous way we choose our leaders. It's not a two-hour glorified episode of The Daily Show, as some may assume. It's a great story with crisp writing, engaging characters, and more than a few laugh-out-loud moments.
