A Republican Governor in a Republican State in full control of Republicans should be passing all the right-wing reforms they can. Do what California and New York do, only the opposite. You wouldn't think it would be difficult passing a bill that protects girls' sports in UTAH. Yet, that was the case when the GOP governor vetoed a bill. Luckily, that veto has since been overridden by the GOP-controlled legislature.
Gov. Spencer Cox vetoed HB 11, a law that would prevent “a student of the male sex from competing against another school on a team designated for female students." Cox claimed the state could get sued and thought it wouldn't be fair to a small number of athletes. It took the legislature less than thirty minutes to override the veto. The legislature felt not passing the bill would be more unfair to a larger number of athletes. We saw real-time examples of this in the news last week.
This is the second common sense reform bill Gov. Cox has opposed. Cox, who takes donations from the teachers' unions, vetoed a school choice bill that would have provided underprivileged families an opportunity to send their kids to a better school than the one they are stuck in because of where they live. Possibly, even a school where teachers don't try indoctrinating their students.
Parents are looking for leaders who will protect their children's education and opportunities. Democrats have proven they'll side against parents and students in favor of unions and activists every chance they get. You wouldn't think parents in Utah would have to worry. Yet, twice this month, an alleged Republican governor has sold them out. When conservatives wonder aloud what's the point of having a GOP, RINOs like Spencer Cox are why.
