In every boy's life, there were two iconic moments growing up. The first Playboy he found in the woods. And the first Victoria's Secret catalog that was accidentally delivered to his address instead of his hotter neighbor. Because men like looking at attractive women, feminists and other woke scolds have been after the lingerie company for some time. The woke finally won, as the company announced it is doing away with attractive VS Angels supermodels and replacing them with the "VS Collective." A collection of womyn who advocate for whatever social issues that leftists care about this week. Lead by Megan Rapinoe, an activist most known for not having as many people willing to pay to see her play soccer as they are for the men's team.
The reason for the switch? Of course, it's the fault of men. In an article full of -ists and -isms, chief executive Martin Waters had this to say:
When the world was changing, we were too slow to respond. We needed to stop being about what men want and to be about what women want.
New underwear model Rapinoe had this to say:
[VS was] patriarchal, sexist, viewing not just what it meant to be sexy but what the clothes were trying to accomplish through a male lens and through what men desired. And it was very much marketed toward younger women.
I don't shop at Victoria's Secret, nor am I a shareholder of the company. Their marketing decisions don't affect me aside from providing easy snark. But this blunder could be the ultimate example of "get woke, go broke." I know the feminist belief is that VS is designed based on what men find sexy. Two key issues there. The people who design the clothes feminists find sexist and problematic tend not to be straight men. Also, while looking at photos of attractive women in their skivvies is enjoyable, if you're at a point where you're seeing the lingerie IRL, it's rarely on long enough to notice whether it's from Victora's Secret or Kohl's.
Women choose clothes based on what makes them feel sexy for themselves. For decades, that has been Victora's Secret. The company sold clothes based on what women wanted and not what men wanted. Now, they want to sell clothes based on what a collective of woke leftists want. We'll find out in a few fiscal quarters how much damage it does to the brand.
