Like many of you, my eyes roll when I hear actors talking about how racist Hollywood is. They don't actually care as much as their publicist wants the trades to think that they care. The virtue being signaled usually matches the size of their donation to the Minnesota Freedom Fund. A lot of the headlines about The Falcon and the Winter Soldier's Anthony Mackie's recent comments make it sound like that. But he actually brought up a point I think most people here agree with, and if anything, he was blasting Hollywood's faux diversity.
Black Panther was celebrated because such representation and many diversity. Yet as Mackie points out, he's only worked with one other black producer in any of the other Marvel movies he's done.
But then when you do 'Black Panther,' you have a Black director, Black producer, a Black costume designer, a Black stunt choreographer. And I'm like, that's more racist than anything else. Because if you only can hire the Black people for the Black movie, are you saying they're not good enough when you have a mostly white cast?
My big push with Marvel is hire the best person for the job. Even if it means we're going to get the best two women, we're going to get the best two men. Because it starts to build a new generation of people who can put something on their résumé to get them other jobs.
The promotion behind Black Panther was all about representation and diversity of both the cast and crew. But if then those same people couldn't get jobs in the other Marvel movies, "representation" and "diversity" are all talk. It's just liberal Hollywood executives checking off boxes. Kind of like the NFL with the black national anthem, but only on Week One.
Not only is liberal Hollywood saying "they aren't good enough for an all-white cast," they are saying that movies with a mostly non-white cast aren't worth the A-team behind the scenes. It should be the best people for the job, and if Hollywood is able to find associate producers and key grips of color for black movies, they should be able to find them for just ... movies. Then black producers, black costume designers, and black stunt choreographers just become producers, costume designers, and stunt choreographers. That would mean actual diversity. Most in Hollywood only care about symbolic diversity that they are celebrated for.
EXIT QUESTION: This has nothing to do with the post, but am I the only one who, no matter how many other roles an actor has, you still only think of them from the first role you saw them in? No matter what else he does, I see Anthony Mackie and I see his portrayal of Tupac in Notorious.
