It would appear that the members of the Seattle City Council enjoyed their free preview of a city without police. Maybe they weren't watching the same thing we were (see CHAZ GETS CHOPPED! SEATTLE MAYOR FINALLY ORDERS POLICE TO SHUT IT DOWN and FATHER OF TEEN MURDERED IN CHOP IS DEMANDING ANSWERS FROM THE SEATTLE MAYOR WHO LET IT HAPPEN). Or maybe this is just a compromise. The #DefundThePolice chuckleheads from CHOP wanted the police cut by 100%. The city council wants to meet them halfway and slash the police budget by only *checks note* 50%. So they want to take away half of the money the police department currently needs to serve and protect the city.
You voted for this, Seattle.
The Police Department's 2021 budget should be reduced by 50%, and also the department's remaining 2020 budget should be cut by 50% this summer.
The plan includes removing Seattle's 911 dispatchers from police control, increasing community-based solutions for public safety, funding a process to "imagine life beyond policing," and investing in affordable housing. The first thing, we just made fun of this morning. The last thing is going to be difficult without a police force to protect the people who live in the affordable housing. The stuff in the middle ... they want to replace the police department with feelings. They wanted to slash the police budget in half and use some of the money to fund dreams and rainbows.
Folks, when people say they want to #DefundThePolice, this is what their plans actually are. They may lie to you and claim they don't mean defund, but that's because they know how unpopular their actual plans are. If you live in a big city and they are voting on the budget, THIS is what they're voting on.
Know that. Make sure they don't. Hold them accountable come Election Day.
