Task Force: Expect a Spike in COVID Thanks to Protesters and Rioters

Task Force: Expect a Spike in COVID Thanks to Protesters and Rioters

Lots of sarcasm and various forms of gallows humor have been used over the past week about how apparently you can't catch COVID-19 from social justice. Or, you can, but it's totally worth it (see THIS SOCIAL DISTANCING SNITCH DISCOVERED HIS POLITICAL OPINION CURES COVID and BILL DE BLASIO SAID THAT PROTESTERS DON'T HAVE TO SOCIAL DISTANCE BECAUSE ... RACISM?!). Well, according to Dr. Deborah Birx — who unlike you, me, and Donald Trump, is an actual scientist — we may not be laughing much longer. Or, some of us may still be laughing, but for different reasons.

Dr. Deborah Birx, Trump's Coronavirus Response Coordinator, relayed fears that the yelling by protesters could potentially negate the health benefits of wearing a mask, and that the destruction of testing sites at those protests would set back efforts to contain the virus' spread. Birx said that 70 such sites had been destroyed...

During, presumably, the mostly peaceful riots and looting. You know how the media made a big deal because the president didn't wear a mask and caused a day's worth of work to be wasted? This is that times *counts on fingers* 70. Times however many days the sites are down. Because they were destroyed by the rioting and looting. Just wanna make sure we feel each other here.

...which had already resulted in an appreciable dip in testing rates there. She advised governors to "scramble now to make sure there is testing available in urban areas."

Birx [on a previous call] said while she did not see a big surge in coronavirus cases over Memorial Day weekend, she was concerned that large metro areas—ones already struggling to stabilize case numbers—would experience an uptick in cases because of the protests. On the call five days later, Birx added her fears that as the protests had grown more peaceful, more people from higher-risk populations began attending them.

For the sake of argument, let's ignore all the evidence that has come out indicating that the shutdown was a colossal mistake and failure on every level. States are just starting to get back in the swing of things. New York City (where the NYC virus originated ) is only now entering Phase 1. Good luck getting people to shut back down now if and when there is a spike. The politicians who spent months telling us we were going to kill Grandma if we left the house have been exposed. Their shutdown rules have been completely arbitrary and only valid as long as there are no political points they can score otherwise.

Sorry Dr. Birx. We done.
