An investigation is ongoing. Sunday afternoon, the police released the following on the incident :
Officers determined that the driver of the vehicle had an outstanding warrant. At one point as officers were attempting to take the driver into custody, the driver re-entered the vehicle. One officer discharged their firearm, striking the driver. The vehicle traveled several blocks before striking another vehicle.
At Monday's press conference, Police Chief Tim Gannon stated he believes the shooting was an accidental discharge. Where the officer in question meant to grab their taser ... but somehow grabbed their handgun instead.
In his my belief that the officer had the intention to deploy their taser, but instead shot Mr. Wright with a single bullet. This appears to me, from what I've viewed and the officer's reaction and distress immediately after, that this was an accidental discharge that resulted in the tragic death of Mr. Wright.
Unclear is what the outstanding warrant was for that led police to arrest Wright. Andy Ngo reports that Wright had an outstanding warrant for a weapons charge. According to Ngo, he allegedly was caught with an illegal pistol and skipped a court date.
If this was the reason outstanding warrant, it could explain why police may have approached the car on higher alert. What's harder to understand is how exactly a trained police office confused their taser with a handgun. Chef Gannon addressed that . Kind of.
For informational purposes we train with our handguns on our dominant side, and our Taser on our weak side. If you're right-handed you carry your firearm on your right side and your carry your Taser on the left. This is done purposefully, and it's trained.
The officer is on administrative leave while an investigation is ongoing. Chief Gannon was careful not to give out too much information so as not to taint the investigation. But he did insinuate that judging from the footage, the officer in question mostly likely won't be returning to duty.
