President Trump may have only a few weeks left in his presidency, but that doesn't mean our man is slacking. Trump is spending every day hard at work doing the people's work. On Thursday it's a big day not just for him, but dare I say for the country. The president is awarding the Medal of Freedom to a true Patriot: Head Coach Bill Belicheck.
Last month, Trump reappointed Belichick to the President's Council on Sports, Fitness and Nutrition and, prior to then, he welcomed Belichick and the Patriots to the White House following their Super Bowl win against the Atlanta Falcons in 2017. Belichick wrote a letter of support for Trump during the 2016 election, and the president has called him a "very good friend." The admiration is so deep that Trump has mused about turning to the coach as a military adviser.
A spokesperson for the Patriots did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
A high honor. Though one might question the timing of this decision. Not because of last Wednesday, when people got all rioty. This is more important. This year, Belichick coached the Patriots to their first losing season in well over a decade. Conversely, former Patriots quarterback Tom Brady led the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to their first playoff spot in over a decade. One might argue that Brady should be given the Medal of Freedom because it's clear HE is the one responsible for Belichick's success. Hopefully, intrepid sports reporters like Dave Portnoy and Clay Travis will be at the ceremony. Someone needs to hold Trump's feet over the fire for this.
Though, if President Trump is looking to troll the haters and losers with medals, I can think of another candidate. One from the sports world. A real BMF if you will ...
