The least normal part of this "new normal" they say we're living is the arbitrary idea of what's an essential worker and what's a nonessential worker. Case in point, I've been considered an essential worker this whole time. Figure that one out. So as states start to open up and phase in who gets to be essential again, here's what Mike Rowe tried telling us when this whole brouhaha started.
The difference between essential and nonessential was the least normal about the new normal. Not to mention, it was completely arbitrary. I'm sure most of us agree on first responders. After that, it seemed to be determined by where you live and who your politician is (see NEW JERSEY GYM OWNER FACES JAIL TIME FOR LETTING PEOPLE WORK OUT and NYC TAILOR OPENLY DEFYING THE LOCKDOWN IS SPEAKING OUT). So congratulations to the people of Texas! As of May 1, you are more essential than the people of California, for no other reason than that your governor wants you to be able to work and provide for your families and not use the pandemic as an excuse to push a shiny new progressive political agenda.
The government will try to do this again. Just because it's the government and that's what it does. But methinks they're going to have a harder time convincing nonessentials that they are nonessential again. Or at least I hope so.
