Enough about what I have to say about the insane, stupid, borderline functionally retarded shutdown. What do doctors have to say? Well, at least 600 of them have written to Trump and described the shutdown as a "mass casualty event." The full letter is here, and dang is it powerful. But since this is a commentary website, let me get you the hot pull quotes:
In medical terms, the shutdown was a mass casualty incident.
Suicide hotline phone calls have increased 600%.
We are alarmed at what appears to be the lack of consideration for the future health of our patients. The downstream health effects of deteriorating a level are being massively under-estimated and under-reported. This is an order of magnitude error.
The millions of casualties of a continued shutdown will be hiding in plain sight, but they will be called alcoholism, homelessness, suicide, heart attack, stroke, or kidney failure. In youths it will be called financial instability, unemployment, despair, drug addiction, unplanned pregnancies, poverty, and abuse.
As always, read the full letter if you can.
More importantly though, the shutdown was a mistake. That's putting it mildly. We can argue, as these doctors did (read the full letter) that initially when we didn't know much about the virus, an abundance of caution was necessary. Fine. I'll concede that point in efforts to win a little favor with the gutless masked wonders. Though the last insult there is probably what we'd call two steps forward, seven steps back. I'd apologize but for the last two months I've know we'd get here and I was told how much I hated people and wanted them to die. The tables, as they say, have turned.
But now the science is in. The initial models are jokes. COVID-19 is a pussy. It affects not the old, but the old AND sick. I really am sorry for the young people who have died, but what I've seen of those young people, their BMI is akin to that of a portly killer whale. I'm sure that'll peeve a few people of a more robust build, but it's not my fault the virus is a fat-shaming troll.
The shutdown will likely cost more lives than it saved. So if you want the shutdown to continue just because that's the position you took early on (or because you actually believe CNN, lol at you), you're heartless and want people to die. See. Two people can play that game.
