Fauci Now Says Second COVID Wave "Not Inevitable." In April He Said It Was...

Good rule of thumb when you're a doctor or scientist who doesn't have all the data available: don't use definitive words like "inevitable" if you're not actually sure something will be inevitable. If you do use unambiguous terms and speak with so much authority, then change your stance a month or so later, be prepared for someone to accuse you of trying to save your reputation after causing considerable damage.

We don't have to accept that as an inevitability. Particularly when people start thinking about the fall. I want people to really appreciate that, it could happen, but it is not inevitable."</blockquote> "Possibility" means something is possible. "Inevitable" means that something is certain. These words are not synonyms. Measure Fauci's stance against what he said on <a href="https://www.msnbc.com/msnbc/watch/dr-fauci-inevitable-that-coronavirus-returns-next-season-82715205505?cid=sm_npd_ms_tw_ma" target="_blank">April 28th while giving an interview to MSNBC</a>: "It's inevitable that the coronavirus will return next season." Now, you may say "But Courtney, he's just reacting to the new data. He's allowed to change his mind." To which I'd say "Sure, he's totally allowed to change his mind. But considering what the nation went through based on some of the advice he issued, and that the new data (that's not the shitty Ferguson model) has been available long before now, f*ck him." Open the Country Already.</a> What respected doctors and scientists should say is "We're not sure yet" or "we're still gathering data, but it's possible COVID-19 could return." What they shouldn't say is that "it's inevitable." Am I being clear? To say that something is for certain, thus scaring people, then a month later saying "Lol, just kidding" as more data comes out that COVID-19 is a bust, that screams to me someone might be trying to save his reputation while covering his wrinkly butt. What I think I'm seeing is Dr. Fauci stretching his hammies as he prepares for some serious back-peddling. I know a lot of people, many of whom I like, will disagree with me. But I'm not going to forget what Fauci's advice has done to this country and the people in it. What is inevitable is that all living things will die. What is inevitable is Joe Biden will lie, lose his pants, and grab a hair sniff. What is possible is that Americans will remember the timeline of COVID-19, who called what wrong, who took what advice, which neighbors you can and cannot trust, what governors shut down their states with draconian measures, who is up for re-election, and those who hold positions of power are always looking for a little more power. It's possible people will remember those things. But it isn't inevitable. Words matter.
