Florida Has Declared that the WWE Is an Essential Business During the Pandemic

The term “essential business” lately has been met with some controversy. It’s how the government decides what businesses should be allowed to stay open while we’re still all pandemic AF. But every business is an essential one to the people who own it and the people who work for it. Most notable essential businesses are grocery stores, restaurants, and now the WWE. Yes, the wrestling company (see WWE Legend The Undertaker: STAND for the National Anthem and Pro Wrestler Glenn Jacobs Savages Democrat Tim Ryan Over SOTU Walkout).

The company in which the president of the United States is a hall of famer has been declared an essential business in the state of Florida, making it a top-five Florida Man story of the year.

Initially, WWE was not designated as an essential business which meant the company would have to comply with the governor’s shelter-in-place order, Demings said. However, after the company, led by chairman and CEO Vince McMahon, had “some conversation” with DeSantis’ office, the company was granted the distinction, according to Demings.

“With some conversation with the governor’s office regarding the governor’s order, they were deemed an essential business,” Demings said. “And so, therefore, they were allowed to remain open.”

So why Florida? The WWE owns a studio there that allows it to keep producing content from a closed set and a controlled environment. Originally, the rumored plan was to record shows to last through May (as rival company AEW did). Now, with this new decree from the governor, the company can continue producing live programs.

Also, there may or may not be this.

I’ll let the election lawyers sort that out. But for wrestling fans like myself, we can continue to be entertained by the artistry of wrestling matches that are performed in front of no audience members. Don’t ever say that we aren’t all making sacrifices during the pandemic.
